Topic:
Development of an effective Outdoor Cooling System for Yachts
Situation:
due to high outdoor temperatures decks and flybridges cannot be used during hot midday hours
there is no system for maritime use on the market
systems for the use on land have no effective cooling effect
land systems do not produce an esthetic fog, nozzles are dripping and are noisy
shape of the nozzles and the quality of the equipment are not adequate for Yachts (simple camping or garden design)
no protection system available to protect against germs or legionella bacterias
Challenges:
definition of the boundaries for the cooling zone
eliminating of external factors
method to measure the decrease of air temperature within the zone
development of a method to measure the composition of kinetic fog
finding out the optimum composition of fog for cooling purpose in different environmental conditions
designing an optimum electric motor/pump/pressure/ nozzle combination
development of a high pressure water treatment system to avoid germs or legionella bacteria under hot conditions
Actions:
construction of a fog chamber
development of a method to determine size, amount and composition of micro droplets in a
kinetic fog
determine the optimum cool fog composition
finding the optimum parameters for the electric motor
construction and testing of pumps with different pressure ranges
construction and testing of different nozzles types
development, testing and optimization of electric motors, pumps, nozzles combinations
finding out the optimum interval timing in different conditions
determine the optimum pressure increase rate and decrease rate in interval operation
studies about contamination of water systems with germs and legionella bacteria
implementation of anti germ water treatment system
designing a depressurization system with circuit with water treatment
execute long tern studies under real conditions on sea
Results:
We have successfully developed the first Yacht Outdoor Cooling System:
environmental-friendly system using clear water only
efficient cooling due to water pressure up to 1780 psi
water chiller unit for fog temperatures down to 5°C
low energy consumption
low water consumption
aesthetic fog appaerance
silent and drip-free nozzles
hygienically clean system
